Prophet Muhammad Cartoons

Well I think it's just amazing watching this global crisis of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons develop - a fascinating clash of values. Personally, I think both sides are basically wrong. I'm all for defending the freedom of the press but that freedom should be used judiciously. Satire has a place in raising awareness but I don't see this particular instance as having any merit.

Meanwhile, the groups of Islam fundamentalists that are over-reacting are clearly out of line in the way they are protesting about these cartoons. They seem to be using this as an excuse to vent a broader range of frustrations with perceptions of Islam.

  1. the muslims are not overreacting.. they are fighting for their rights. It is a religious issue and it is something that can never be taken in hand easily.. It concerns our life and our belief. No one has the right to critise another religion.

  2. Thanks for your comments but I beg to differ with your claim that "no one has the right to criticise another religion". I have the right to criticise any culture, belief, value or religion that I want. The freedom to express one's point of view is essential to a healthy society. That expression can and should be made without being mocking or insulting.

  5. To Majid,

Are you really that ignorant ?? Any god or religion that states you have the right to get up and fight for peace upon your religion is no God at all. What kind of God would want you to get angry and fight over some silly cartoons. Who cares ? It was a satirical joke, just as The Life of Brian was a satirical comedy movie about my christian religion. I did not take offence to it. People are entitled to their opinions and views. If Allah is so merciful (as I am sure he is) then he would be merciful to the Danish newspaper. Muslims as usual end up contradicting themselves. You sound like a grown up boy, learn to think like one. Think for yourself.

  8. As we have noticed so far, there were over-whelming comments on the actions and activities conducted by certain 'muslim' individuals with connections on the re-publications of the Prophet.

    >Problem of overstating:

Its not fair to the muslim community to generalize the action`s of those responsible as acts of muslim`s.

By identifying the people involved is insufficient. We must be able to differentiate those who are and those who are not. By not being able to do so, we could possibly and inevitably resemble the individuals we welcomingly condemn.

By not being able to pin-point the parties at fault, and carry-on expressing our hatreds and disgusts thus sending the wrong message across our people, we can and most probably find ourselves on the hot seats similar those extremists who are sending wrong informations to the muslim participants.

    >>The extremists

They are individuals who instil fear or/and anger in the minds of the the uncertains. They clearly understand that these are the 'basic tools' that can certainly work peoples' minds towards the extremists' goals and objectives.

    >>>Who are the uncertains?

They are people who lack of directions and decisions. Their minds are easily tapped on and influenced by others.

    >>>>Who are the innocents??? We shall discuss this issue as follows...

    Painting a senario...

The leader behind the plot of bringing about this racial disequilibrium

    (Saddam)

Extremists who assisted in gathering people for riots

    (His cabinet)

People or individuals who participated in the uproar and demonstrated violence

    (Iraqi soldiers and the people)

With the above spelled out and given its role, now its time for questions..

Q1. If we were to condemn for the outbreak of the war against Iraq, who is/are our primary target?

Q2. When we finally defeat Iraq, who should be held responsible and punished?

Q3. In the post war duration, will the people of Iraq be punished?

Clearly, the people of Iraq consisted of 2 groups. Group 1 are soldiers who took part in the killing during the war by taking both offensive and defensive stance and group 2 are natives who are not involved in the war.

However, non of the soldiers nor natives were and should be hold responsibility. If we cannot differentiate this fact, we are no better than the muslims who burn Danish properties and showered violence to the Danes.

Now... Just what was in the minds of the British when they wounded the Iraqi youths as published on the papers recently...?

  9. ATTENTION ALL,

++WE MUSLIMS BELIEVE THAT PROPHET MOHAMMAD (p.b.u.h)

    WAS INSULTED BY THOSE COMICS.

++THE NEWS PAPER THAT PUBLISHED THOSE COMICS ADVRTISED AN OFFICIAL APOLOGY TO THE WHOLE ISLAMIC NATION, WHY WOULD SUCH AN APOLOGY BE ADVERISED IF THEY REALLY BELIEVE IN THE COMIC CONTENT ???!!.

++TRY TO READ ABOUT THE GREATEST HUMAN FIGURE OF ALL TIMES MOHAMMAD (p.b.u.h) BEFORE PRACTISING YOUR DRAWING TALENT !!

++THE ABOVE POINTS SHOW SELF CONTRADICTION AND IGNORANCE.

++WE DEFEND OUR BELOVED PROPHET, IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT YOU'LL GONNA HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT.

++FINALLY, ANY ACTION THAT DISGRACES OUR RELIGION WILL BE MET BY AN IMMEDIATE RESPONSE ( THIS IS HOW MUSLIMS LOVE THEIR RELIGION, TRY TO LEARN !! )

  10. Muslims should start to think and question everything. Anybody who becomes stagnat, rots. Start asking question.this is the basis of human existence, take criticism in stride and discuss and counter argue if u have the argument.

  11. Many of the world’s problems and conflicts arise because we have lost sight of the basic humanity that binds us all together as a human family. We tend to forget that despite the diversity of race, religion, culture, language, ideology and so forth, people are equal in their basic desire for peace and happiness: we all want happiness and do not want suffering. We strive to fulfill these desires as best we can. However, as much as we praise diversity in theory, unfortunately often we fail to respect it in practice. In fact, our inability to embrace diversity becomes a major source of conflict among peoples.

I strongly believe that we must consciously develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. We must learn to work not just for our own individual self, family or nation, but for the benefit of all mankind. Universal responsibility is the best foundation both for our personal happiness and for world peace. We are all one!

  13. I am a moslem myself and to be honest, I am starting to feel great shame regarding this whole situation. It all got out of proportions. People are being manipulated and used for somethimg that could've been taken with so much grace and tolerance.

We the muslim keep preaching how great we are, Allah is the only God and the beloved Prophet..bla, bla, bla, bla.

Thats how I feel about it. If I am true in my heart and soul, and if I am true to my religion and my beliefs, then nobody can come in betwean and manipulate with me, nobody can insult me that much that I would rise, go out and demolish and burn things down just because I might feel hurt. I am beyond that, because that is what my religion and my belief has thought me. If I go out and threat people than I am no better then the others who provoce me. Violance has never been the answer and it never will.

And one more thing, I really dont want other "moslems" to tell me that I should feel threatend and ashaimed because of the cartoons, that I should rise and march with them in the fight against those which are hating the moslems. I feel ashaimed because of this kind of people.

I dont wish to be a part of this, and I am sure other feel like I do.

  14. I think the people in the muslim community are too over react to the prophet Muhammad cartoons. basically, all religions are the same, religion taught us love and live in hammony with each other, to respect to forgive, but in order to achieve these, we must have sense of humor. Too offensive is the opposite of sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that the muslims have a right to be angry becuase they crossed the line of being funny to being offensive and stupid. You people would not understand becuase they haven't showed a picture of Jesus holding an oozie yet the Danish government did not let that picture be printed but he let the one with the prophet be printed thats bull-shit!!!!!!1 you do not know anything about islam and you dare to mu\ock them shame on all of you ass licker!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think if someone is making fun of me i might response to it in a negative way, but two wrongs will not make it right. I do believe some muslim individuals feel offensive but others might take avantage of the situation to let out their angers which may not related to the issue, i saw a little boy throwing rocks and destroying properties that makes me wonder what this boy know about muslim, but one thing i know for sure is that if my parents do it then it must be ok for me to do it too. i think the most people who enjoy watching this kind of conflict are the politicians, who often use religions to justify their actions that why Middle East will not be peace, and if you live long enough you will know what i mean. so far the debate seems to get uglier when someone starts to use the words bull-shit, ass licker and maybe who knows what next. by the way, some religions forbid to say those words.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This whole thing has made me ill. It is unfortunate the images offended the Muslim community. Now it seems that that gives them the right to burn everything in sight and desecrate anything they see fit in an acts of retaliation and retribution. If you are offended by the images, then don't view them! The Muslim community seems to have an idea that the rest off the world owes them some sort of special consideration because of their religion. The world does not revolve around a single religion, especially one the wholly embraces the rationalization of violence in the form of religious acts...

    ReplyDelete

  18. Honestly, I think there is more to this than cartoons. I believe that a majority of the Muslim community has a deep-seeded hatred of the west and capitalize on any opportunity to vent this anger. The cult like fanaticism exhibited on these occasions of violence goes towards this underlying fact. The images were published in Denmark but they chant 'Die America!' or 'Death to Israelis!' as they burn their neighbors cars in Pakistan. This is a reoccurring trend in the middle east and a fundamental issue driving this animosity.

This is a selective use of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not entitle anyone to do it. If you call black a black (a fact) it is called racist remark but if you make a cartoon which has no relevance to fact it is called freedom of speech. Absurd logic.

Secondly, you guys should all go and do some research, dont post anything when youre obviously so ignorant about the world and history. Get back to the country where you came from where you can worship your so called GOD to your hearts content. We will cary on with our lifestyle the better without Allah rubbish being preached.

  39. For Sara. You have a point. The crusades and more were all 'missions' on behalf of a god BUT how long ago were they? I look back at that bit of christian history with shame but am happy the we have evolved past that insanity. Islam, on the other hand, is still embracing / justifying this type of righteous violence. Violence, even passively by ask a god to do it for you, is wrong. Then and now.

Religions (none of which I follow) are supposed to help us all realize exactly what you've stated - we're hypocrites. We should be humble and think of others first. Not exactly what's going on in the world today. Islam seems to be going through its 'crusades' phase and I hope the world survives it.

  44. I'm an Orthodox Christian, so I dare to say that I have no prejudices in my judgements (because I belong neither to Catholics nor to Muslims), anyway, I hope so.

I see this problem like that: obviously, any conflict is a product of mistakes of both sides, and both sides are responsible for the result we have now - a confrontation of Muslims and All The Other World.

I'm absolutely convinced that religion is something worth respecting, regardless of what religion it is (Christians, Muslims, Buddists, etc). Especially when this religion's already became much more than religion - Muslims now are independent nation, with their own culture, which's been formed for ages. From this point of view, NO ONE in the world has the right to do (say, write, draw, etc) something POTENTIALLY abusive (even potentially) for this religion. I suppose, the scandal publisher DID understand it, and this makes me think that politics have overwhelmed his moral qualities.. Well, it's a pity that politics has degraded to such level when "moral norms of polititians" are just words..

On the other hand, what we can tell about Muslims. Well, what about thousands of people killed by them around the world? Can it be accounted for being offended by everyone? I daresay that it's something in common with child psychology - brandishing with your fists beating everybody around, but starting to weep when somebody abuses you. As a Christian I can say that it's not a REAL strength - hitting back when abused. Patiency and ability to keep peace - THIS IS THE REAL STRENGTH..

I want to say that it's only my opinion. I'm sorry if it's offended anybody.

  47. Dear All,

I know the cartoon controversy has somehow blown out of proportion. Think about this, God created us with all kinds of feelings. He gave us anger, pain, frustration, jealousy and etc... Most importantly God gave us a sense of humour. I'm not saying that the danish cartoonist is not at fault here. He's at fault for being insensitive. However, I have a feeling that God (the all knowing) is probably looking at this situation as it is. A cartoon strip by a Danish guy! He probably find it interesting if not funny. Because the cartoon has instigated a feeling so deep within the Muslims (anger) that they are willing to prosecute the cartoonist. When the truth of the matter is that no one has the right to prosecute anybody but God himself.

Prophet Mohammad for that matter is a peaceful man. If he can forgive Abu Jahal an uncle of his whom tried to kill him many many many times... Why can't we the mere follower of Islam? Are we more supreme than the Prophet Mohammad that we took it upon ourselves to eradicate all that judge our religion?

  49. Why did Christians tolerate, and even laugh along with "The Life of Brian"

Why do Catholics laugh at "Father Ted."

Because if you love life, you got to have a sense of humour, and appreciate other people's viewpoints, you don't have to agree with them. You have also got to accept that nothing is perfect, especially any religious group. If they were perfect, they would not be murdering people.

    ReplyDelete
  50. If muslims can portray other religions' main entities, why can't we?

I have seen cartoons, made by muslims, depicting jews as vampires and christians as idiots running into walls. Why should they be able to present material such as this? Why should certain muslim extremists be able to attack our nations with more than necessary force and not allow us to publish a stupid cartoon?

Everybody has their own point of view, a different picture of the world they live in, the people they live with and their beliefs.

This futile argument has gotten out of hand and is totally ridiculous. When the select few Muslim leaders and followers stop encouraging extremism we shall stop what we do against them.

The cartoon, which i don't really find funny, or offensive, should be taken with goodwill and nothing more than that. It is a mere depiction of the artist's view of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h). I am not saying that i approve of the cartoon, but nor do i approve of the out of control rioting which has happened because of it.

The publication which printed the cartoons apologised formally. They have realised their mistakes in allowing the publication of it and this should be accepted. If this has not happened, what is the point in an apology? Nobody seems to have listened, so i say listen.

Mr. Syeda Wajiha Hassan, i would just like to ask, if Islam teaches unity, why don't we all unify and talk this through instead of rioting? Why does the vast majority of Muslim groups outcast anyone not following Islam?

This world is ridiculous. Religion has brought us to the point where there are more conflicts taking place now than ever before. Believes have mixed and conflicted, leading to argument and isolation of certain entities. People have different beliefs and they have their views. Leave them be and everyone else.

To finish, i say, wait until you're perfect before you start critiscising others.

Oh, and by the way, these are the words of myself, a 15 year old boy. I believ them to be mature and diplomatic. Why can't evryone be like this over the situation.

I know u guys r better Muslims than I am; but I am just curios... Is this all we r capable of? Reacting and over-reacting r two different things. I think its time for all of us to look back and take some lessons from the life of Our Prophet (PBUH).As I said I am not a good Muslim, so Plz forgive me if I said something wrong.Hurting the sentiments of any religion cannot be accepted as a case of moral behavior and neither can it be defended as the freedom of press or freedom of speech. Questioning the authenticity of any religion is itself blasphemous, for everyone values and treasures his faith. The caricatures were needlessly provocative, revealing an arrogant disregard for the beliefs of Muslims. Yet the protests which followed it became more than just a reaction to hurt sentiments. The politicians and leaders have again fired up religious controversies, all in the name of cartoons.Do u guys realize that most of the dead are themselves Muslims? What we are witnessing in many cases is the caricature that the cartoonists sought to depict - intolerant and violent. Think about it my Muslim brothers/sisters and correct me if I am wrong. 61. The reasons why the people printed these cartoons are because they (the christians) have lost their religion and its teachings, and their lives are based on jokes. Whereas we are muslims and we believe every word of our religion and a slight insult to our prophet hurts our hearts, but these people do not understand because they are senseless.

  62. in the name of allah the most merciful the most beneficeful all praise goes to him the almighty !!!

well about these cartoons the main thing we all should think about is if these foolish people think they can get away from what they had done ,live under new identies well they are absolutley wrong you cant escape almighty allahs eyes he sees all so they will be punished for what they did inshallah! and that soon the prophet muhammad will return to intercede for those people for his ummah. so all i would say now is dont please harm the beloved prophet whom i love very much who has somehow helped me to be better who is in my heart and mind always for that if anyone does this again then fear allah the almighty and as a muslim and for all other muslims we must brcome a barrier for the prophet and protect him and destroy whatever tries to cause him harm. let him rest in peace. (may peace and blessings of allah be upon him )ameen !!!

  63. I think the majority of Muslims probably think alike, after all it is a religion...But then there are the fanatics. A group of people driven by what? Morality? I dont think so... I still cant get over the thought of 65 vigins and a seat next to Allah for becoming a martyr. Now thats a hoot for sure. wait....beheading innocent people is righteous and just? oh, ok... so tell ya what, let me print some more cartoons.

  67. Look u all non-muslims how God punish that man, now u see all the power of Islam, the unity of mulims, every muslim hate the man who try to insult their religion(Islam)&Allah punish like this.

    ReplyDelete
  68. oops.....this has gone way too much I feel....

The reason why Muslims got angry is because Prophet Muhammad is very close to every Muslim's heart....
So its pretty natural to feel hurt and react or rather over-react when somebody insults him....its taken as personal injury.....

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction ...
the term equal might not be applicable here though....:)

Its very natural for Muslims to react but Muslims should never ever forget the fact that they are expected to emulate the Prophet's Character.......

And I as a Muslim think that the Prophet would never have reacted violently to such silly incidents....
No cartoon can change the fact that HE WAS A TRUE PROPHET OF ALLAH and he truely was a GREAT GUY!!!

Peaceful protests are what is required not violence and definitely not death.......and as a Muslim I really don't feel like rejoicing over that guy's death....infact I feel sorry about this whole issue...

  69. the non muslims of this world did u see how that rascal was burned in the accident.in my view it was not an accident, it was a dreadful punishment by allah almighty. we as pakistanis above of all muslims have never ever made a cartoon of some sort or even talk rubbish about other pupils religion.a stupid cartoon cant change the fact that our prophet was a tromendous man. tears fall out of my eyes as i saw the picture. i cant dare talking about it. as this is the most dreadful injury i have ever gone through as the prophet is very close to my heart and all the other muslims. may allah grant that bastereds soul in hell. 70. All you Muslim Brothers and Sisters .....Please read the following teaching of Prophet Muhammed (SAW)...

One companion asked him, Give me some advice by virtue of which I hope for good in the life hereafter, and he said, "Don't be angry."

Another person asked, what will save me from the wrath of God, and he said, "Do not express your anger."

A third person asked three times, 0 Messenger of Allah, give me an order to do a short good deed, and he said, "Don't be angry."

Once he asked a question of his companion, "Who among you do you consider a strong man?" They said, the one who can defeat so-and-so wrestler in a fight, and he said, that is not so. The one who is strong is the one who can control himself at the time of anger.

He also said that anger is like fire, which destroys you from within, and it can also lead you to the fire of hell by your own expressions of anger unjustly.

Friends it was just an absurd piece of work by an unfortunate soul who din't know a thing about The Last Prophet of Islam.........

If I say DIAMOND is not DIAMOND but CHARCOAL does it change anything????? DIAMOND is still DIAMOND in the eyes of those who see..........those who understand.....then why the anger and hatred???
    Just let it go.....

Once again I say We Muslims should behave in a manner that befits a Muslim.....Do not mind the conduct of the People who haven't got the opportunity as us to understand the qualities of the Prophet.......

Uncle Sam you do not know what your missing.....:)))
and yeahhhhh keep ur cool sirrr......

  71. In such a case as this, it only belies the uncertainity and insecurity in one's beliefs when one must resort to attacks and violence. It paints a picture of frustration over the failure of one's beliefs to accomplish whatever it is one hoped for. And resentment of those contrary beliefs that have succeeded in achieving for others what one had hoped for. In short, it is the expression of frustration over failure, to somehow blame others for one's yawining shortcomings. The non-Muslim world, and much of the Muslim world waits for these unfortunate souls to grow-up. Hopefully this can occur without too much more suffering on the part of additional innocent targets of this infantile behavior.

  72. All I have to say is that if Christians responded as violently and with the same level of buffoonish behavior as Muslims everytime Christ is depicted inappropriately the world would be in an uproar. I think the world only has room for one religion based upon zealotry and homicidal fanatacism. Maybe that is why the Middle East has ALWAYS been a place of instability and religious/civil/tribal war?

  73. I wonder how much we, as muslims, civilized in a way that we had never touched on any religous irony to any of the world's religious leaders, it is a pride that we keep this standard where others who claim civilizations are much far away from it.

May allah keep our social and family bonds, the drive of assisting each other and the low crime rate , that if all compared to the western part of the world are fading away by time.

  74. Alas, at the end of the day it's all about real freedom and values. The lack of sensibilities on both sides are a clear sign that we, as one people, regardless of our differences, are struggling for a true notion of justice and freedom. That Golden Mean, or the right balance, is clearly lacking in this age of extremism (of all forms - secular and otherwise).

Personally i dont see any benefits behind publishing those obviously offensive cartoons of a religious figure who is venerated by over a billion, nonmuslims included.

To use 'freedom of expression' as an excuse is akin to saying 'I can say whatever I want about anybody, even if its disrespectful'. Childish to say the least.Regarding reactionary extremists, I believe they have brought shame to themselves by disrespecting the universal message of their own religion. Because I know their religion does not accept such behaviour, but encourages patience as a cardinal virtue, I do not insult it.
