Went down to London to visit the Delamar Academy Open House today. Kind of a long story but basically, I've always been kind of interested in the way they can make-up someone into aliens and monsters in shows. So a few weeks ago I was cruising around the net reading about the latex foam they use to do this and found this great site called Monster Makers. Essentially, it's a shop that will provide you with everything you need to do it yourself; the same stuff they use in Hollywood. But it seems trickier than reading a book and following instructions so I said to myself, "self, wouldn't it be cool to go on a monster making course". So I started looking and lo and behold, I found the Delamar Academy Make-up School. They have a week long workshop on how to make casualties (burns, cuts, stabs, bruises, etc). They will also have a two week workshop on prosthetics which teaches you how to use that foam latex. In fact, in one year you can get trained to be a professional make-up artist! Now there's an interesting alternative career! I think it would be a riot to do something like this just for fun and then dress the kids next Halloween! I very tempted by the casuality workshop. So I went to the open house to check it out and see the portfolio's of the students. Yep, looks fun.
im interested in becoming a make-up artist and have heard of the delamar academy only through internet research and am interested in studying in london. However there are so many courses to choose from that Im unsure as to which is the best. all the academys say that they are great but I really would like to get other peoples opinion. please if there are any make-up artists out there can you advise me as to where to study?
ReplyDeleteI just graduated from Delamar this last June and I can tell you there is no school like it. It was absolutely fabulous. I am not just saying that because I graduated from there but I come from the US, where there are many make-up schools...I went all the way to London to get my training...that must tell you something!
ReplyDeleteI am in exactly the same position as Cheryl. All the colleges I have spoken to or have gone to see tell you that they are the best and I can't find a professional unbiased review on any of them. If anyone knows where I can get one from it'd be very thankful!
ReplyDeleteBut I have gone to look at Delamar, and I thought it was so good, the people were really friendly and the class sizes small, butI just dont want to go somewhere and then find out I have made a big mistake and not be able to get a job after.
Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks
Kirsty and Cheryl..i graduated this summer from Delamar with Jenny and i have to agree with her. I live in Scotland and had to choose my course from a distance. I opted for the 3 mth course until i went to the open day and was so impressed i went for the year.I loved every minute and made friends for life. Many of the tutors are working on current films and know the industry really well. I am so glad i have done this and would recommend it to anyone. Penny Delamar's daughter Leda is lovely and am sure would be happy to chat about all aspects of the courses.. Good luck and go for it.
ReplyDeleteMe again..the jobs take time but with hard work people in the industry are willing to give you work experience and then it can lead to jobs. Don't be fussy and take anything, it will pay off. I do a lot of work for free but the jobs are starting to come now.
ReplyDeleteam a make up artist ..and i need to know more about this major i wanna be a big thing in life..i always serch about accademys .hope u can call me or send email and to explaine all the detalis.about how and when i can veset this accademy to strat .00961/3/132964.........00961/3/293631......telefax...00961/5/480381 hope u can help me soon soon .
ReplyDeleteI am hoping (fingers croosed) to start at the academy this year, i will only just be 18 when i start. Does anyone think i should wait a while before going here? Ellie x
ReplyDeleteDon't wait. Get your qualification and then get as much work experience as you can even if that means freebies. Like many careers, the qualification just gets you in the door. It's your experience and skill that accrue afterwards thats crucial.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to find the best place to study make-up, I prefer the prosthetics side of make-up. As well as Delamar I am considering Revelations School of Make-up in Manchester. Does anyone know anything about this school. Good or Bad?
ReplyDeletethanks!
It is very hard trying to decide which school to go to as they are all going to say they are the best. Delamar only use experts in that field for each week, meaning there are more teachers to give you experience on the jobs they are doing.
ReplyDeleteThey are also the only British school to have trained an Oscar and a Bafta winner. Penny Delamar has also been a judge for the Bafta make-up and hair award.
They are obviously also linked to Middlesex University in case you decide you want to get a degree as well. Just though a few facts might help as the industry is too small for anyone to be completely unbiased.
I hope this helps.
I also am looking to do a make-up course, I am getting so excited looking at the Delamar 1 year course, i really want to go for it but it is very expensive. how did all you guys manage it when you were there? cost of living etc?
ReplyDeleteAlso is it really hard to find work after the course?
i really want to do it this sept, am hopefully going to arrange a meeting with them?
I'll be grateful for any info.
